The Social Justice Fund

The Social Justice Fund

We view the stock market as a weighing mechanism where a large number of participants vote from their perspective on the accurate valuation of a given security. Through this system, capitalism and the free world as we know it comes to exist with efficiency and liquidity. Unfortunately, not everyone is able to participate in this process. We see ourselves as a bridge acting on behalf of those not yet able to vote. In this spirit, we are inspired to continually build strategies that are resilient and performant based on our evolving market thesis. In doing so, we pursue our cause and support others to do the same.

The Social Justice Fund - Investing

Our work is accomplished through the research, development, and testing of frameworks built around decision making as it relates to passive and active investment strategies. Our passive strategies are focused on what we think of as "own the world". Here we take an indexed, broad diversification approach with semi-annual rebalancing. In contrast, our active strategies are more concentrated and target what we think of as "businesses on sale". Here we rely on a combination of fundamental and technical factors to identify strong businesses trading at what we believe to be a discount.

In short, we make decisions rationally, research endlessly, and carefully study markets to find opportunities that will provide a reasonably safe, yet substantial return on investment. This work happens across several broad areas:

Market Analysis

Identify current market conditions and assess for potential strategy development

Strategy Development

Search for stocks, ETFs, or options aligned with our market analysis

Strategy Execution

Buy shares or contracts in securities that are undervalued with nearterm upside potential

Investing Purpose

Share an annual portion of our monetary success from capital gains and dividends

The Social Justice Fund - Giving

We give in proportion to the size of our fund annually. As we grow, we will give more and eventually move from what we think of as a "pre-foundation" to a full fledged "foundation". The main difference between the two being our size and ability to sustainably give. For us, sustainable giving means that we are able to continuously grow our giving regardless of donations received. This is made possible from the investing portion of our program reaching what we think of as a "critical mass".

As we move towards a "foundation", our research will shift from a primary focus on investing to a dual focus on investing and giving. This new emphasis will help us better identify community need and establish a more formal process for assessing organizations. (Today, we rely solely on our board member's perception of a given organization.) That said, the high level steps for how we decide which organizations to support will likely remain the same:

Identify Organizations

Seek out passionate, impactful social justice based organizations anchored in Christ

Assess Community Need

Assess community need and determine program fit at organizations identified

Strategic Selection

Favor small, local organizations and those less likely to receive funding elsewhere

Giving Purpose

Help the helpers achieve their social justice based mission for the glory of God
